Biography

Hi, my name is Ryan Schonert, and I am from Fairmount, IL. I graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL in 2016 with a B.S. in Chemistry. After spending my undergraduate years searching for a career direction, I fell in love with forensic science as a way to practically apply lab skills to the needs of criminal justice. I applied to the Penn State Master's program for forensic chemistry because the staff and faculty demonstrated a dedication to high quality education while providing hands-on experience. I hope to use my education from Penn State in either the public or private sector working in a lab.  In my free time I enjoy superhero movies, disc golf, and playing music.

Research Interests

I will be working with Dr. Jack Hietpas on my research project involving the transfer of gunshot residue.  This research will focus on the use of SEM-EDS to qualitatively and quantitatively determine the presence of gunshot residue in different situations in which it may be transferred from the firearm to people nearby.
